Lamana's Story

What led to you becoming a yarn producer?

LAMANA is a modern yarn brand founded in 2010 in Germany, driven by a deep love for
hand knitting, exclusive fibers, and fashion design. Our roots are in Peru, where we have close family ties, which naturally drew us to the extraordinary fiber traditions of South America, and we initially specialized in premium Peruvian yarns. Over time, that passion grew into close, long-term partnerships with carefully selected and owner-managed spinning mills in both Italy and Peru.

Where do you create? Do you have a team?

We are based in Bielefeld, Germany, where our in-house team handles everything, from
product development, purchasing, sales and marketing through to fulfilment. Our knit design collections and patterns are also created here. Furthermore, we publish our own LAMANA print magazines with 2-3 issues per year. Our yarns are produced exclusively in Italy and Peru by partners we know personally, and through regular visits, we have built long, trusted friendships with over the years. Through this constant and close exchange, we can guarantee working conditions that meet our high standards for fair and sustainable production. Responsibility and animal welfare have been at the heart of LAMANA from day one.

 What inspires you?

We are inspired by the timeless beauty of natural fibers and the enduring appeal of classic, yet fashion-forward, design. Fall and Winter are the perfect season for what we do. We love layering luxurious textures and playing with warmth and lightness to create pieces that feel as beautiful as they look. There is something deeply satisfying about crafting a yarn that bridges tradition and contemporary style.

Can you walk us through one of your yarns from start to finish?

Our Como (100% Merino Superfine) is one of our most loved yarns.  Como begins with a vision: a yarn that is pure, versatile, and luxuriously soft, yet with an
extraordinary lightness that sets it apart.  The raw wool comes from certified sheep farms in
Australia, traceable batch by batch to the individual farm. It is fully certified under the
Sustainable Wool Standard, which checks animal welfare, working conditions, and wool
classification under the AWEX standard. Crucially, all LAMANA yarns are 100% mulesing-
free. The wool is then spun by our trusted, owner-managed partner mill in Italy, using
innovative manufacturing processes that give Como its signature lightness, resulting in knitted pieces that weigh significantly less than usual, with an incomparably airy wearing comfort. Color development happens within the distinctive LAMANA color world, where carefully selected shades are designed to run across the entire yarn collection, allowing knitters to mix textures freely while staying within a harmonious palette. The finished yarn is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified (certificate no. 21.0.82862), guaranteeing it has been independently tested against over 1,000 harmful substances.
