What lead to you becoming a yarn producer?
BC Garn was founded in Denmark in 1996 by Bo Carstensen, the son of a weaver and wool trader, and his wife joined him in their business. Their focus was on creating natural fiber yarns in a wide color palette. In 2018, the Carstensens sold BC Garn to another family - Britta and Carsten Kremke. The Kremkes have had had a long relationship with BC Garn as their German distributors.
Britta grew up in her mother's yarn store and even owned her own yarn store. After working in the business world for awhile, she returned to her passion. She and Carsten started their own yarn distribution business, eventually buying the BC Garn yarn line.
Where do you create? Do you have a team?
We source our yarns jointly with different mills globally to achieve the quality and colors that inspire us and others. We look closely at the expertise and specialties of the mills when choosing our partners, not only in terms of fiber to be spun, but also in terms of achieving the right color palette for the yarn.
We are also proud to have introduced a number of GOTS certified yarns. GOTS, or Global Organic Textile Standard, is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers and requires independent certification of certain environmental and social criteria. You can learn more about GOTS here.
We are a family-owned business and are passionate about yarn.
What inspires you?
Wool is in Britta's genes (having grown up in a yarn store!). Her personal passion is for yarn in the traditional British and Shetland types of wool.
Can you walk us through one of your yarns from start to finish?
We produce our yarns in large quantities, so the sourcing of raw fiber can rarely be tracked to individual farms. However, the GOTS certification means that all fiber is sourced from farms that have been certified for compliance with organic farming standards. This allows us to be sure that the animals are treated humanely.
