Two colors of a sport weight yarn; our kit contains OHM Farm Yarn, a limited edition alpaca yarn sourced from Ohio alpacas, and from James Cox Knits.
In your kit, we’ve included enough yarn to make the beanie.
If you’re not using one of our kits, you will need at least 183 m (200 yds) of each of two colors (Color A and Color B).
Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate.

Getting Started:

For all abbreviations, please check the glossary at the end of the pattern.
You will be working this hat in the round, so there will not be a seam.

Instructions are for size S/M (L/XL).

Working in the Round and Stitch Markers

Stitch markers are a useful way to keep track of the beginning of each round. They are placed on your needle and slipped as you work. They move with your knitting and will not end up in your final project. In this project, a stitch marker is used to mark the start of the round. Once you move to double-pointed needles to decrease the crown, it’s easiest to place the marker one stitch into the new round. The first stitch on the needle remains the beginning of the round. Rounds 1–4: Work in k1, p1 rib. To learn how to move the yarn back and forth for ribbing or seed stitch, CLICK HERE.

Round 5: *K1, p1; repeat from * to end of round.
Round 6: *P1, k1; repeat from * to end of round.

Rounds 5 and 6 set the seed st pattern.

Rounds 7–26: Repeat Rounds 5 and 6.

Rounds 27–30: Continue in established pattern using 1 strand of Color A and 1 strand of Color B.

Changing Color

To change one of the strands of Color A to Color B, cut one of the strands of Color A, leaving an 8" tail. Then leave an 8" tail of Color B and continue, holding the remaining strand of Color A together with Color B.

Rounds 31–48: Continue in established pattern using 2 strands of Color B, using technique above to change colors. Continue to change colors as detailed below.

Rounds 49–52: Continue in established pattern using 1 strand of Color B and 1 strand of Color A.

Rounds 53–66: Continue in established pattern using 2 strands of Color A.

Rounds 67–70: Continue in established pattern using 1 strand of Color A and 1 strand of Color B.

For size S/M:

Rounds 71–80: Continue in established pattern using 2 strands of Color B.

For size L/XL:

Rounds 71–79: Continue in established pattern using 2 strands of Color B.

Round 80: Continue in established pattern to last 2 sts, p2tog. 117 sts.

Almost Done:

With 6 sts remaining, cut both strands of yarn, leaving a 10" tail of each.

Using a tapestry needle threaded with both tails of yarn, run the needle and yarn through the remaining 6 sts, taking the sts off the needles in the process. To learn how to run a tapestry needle through the remaining stitches, CLICK HERE.

Pull the sts tight to close the top of the hat.

Finishing:

Weave in all yarn ends using a tapestry needle.
