Camp Knit-a-way 2023
*** UPDATE! Friend of Row House Melissa Leapman (yes, that Melissa Leapman) will be joining us as a Camp Counselor for the day on Saturday, September 9. All attendees will get one of her latest shawl patterns (it hasn't been released yet :)), and she'll walk us through its unique construction and share tips and tricks along the way, including the best cast on for knitting from the center out, super simple short rows, surface embellishment, and more!
Already registered? You are good to go - this is included in all knitting packages, whether for a Room or for a Camper ***
Join us for our first ever Camp Knit-a-way! We're hosting a special weekend on Laurel Island in East Hampton, Connecticut from September 8 to 10, 2023. We'll take over the whole island for Camp Knit-a-way, and attendees will have access to the island's amenities, including kayaks, SUP, pedal boats, swimming, volleyball, bocce, giant Jenga, private and group decks, board games, yard games, sauna, and more. There will be plenty of knitting (or crocheting) time, as well as s-mores and a fire pit at night, group and weather willing.
Mary Annarella (a/k/a @lyricalknits on Instagram) will be our Camp Counselor, together with our Founder, Cheryl, and she'll be giving a lecture on Killer Queen and the Art of the Stitch on Sunday, September 10th. We'll also be featuring her Killer Queen Cowl pattern in your gift bag, along with your choice of Birch Hollow Fibers Phillis DK colors.
Camp Knit-a-way is a rustic island experience with plenty of unstructured knitting and activity time. You can learn more about Laurel Island on its website (linked to here). Laurel Island is only accessible by boat, so the island's party boat will bring people to the island Friday afternoon (we will have hourly boat trips beginning at 4pm and ending at 7pm) and will bring people back to shore Sunday afternoon. There is free parking available at the shore.
The 4-1-1:
- The weekend will begin at 4pm on Friday, September 8th, and will conclude at 4pm on Sunday, September 10th.
- We will arrange for an earlier boat trip to shore on Sunday, if some people need to leave earlier.
- All meals will be catered, so please advise us whether you have any dietary restrictions no later than August 18th.
- All cabins have kitchenettes, and we will provide a few basics in every cabin. Meals will all be served at the Lodge.
- Biodegradable shampoos and soaps are provided, and Laurel Island asks that you not use any non-biodegradable shampoos or soaps.
- There are limited rooms and room types, so once they're gone, they're gone.
A Room package includes:
- The room you choose (not a cabin, but a room in a cabin); you may decide to find a roommate or not.
- A gift bag with plenty of goodies and a kit of Mary Annarella's Killer Queen Cowl and your choice of colors in Birch Hollow Fibers Phillis DK for one camper
- All meals by a private chef, and plenty of snacks for one camper
- A lecture by Mary Annarella on Killer Queen and the Art of the Stitch for one camper
- A shawl pattern from Melissa Leapman and an instructional session with her reviewing design elements from the pattern for one camper
- Use of the island amenities and plenty of unstructured knitting time for one camper
- Round trip transportation from shore to the island for one camper
A Camper package includes the following (it does not include a room, so you will need to share with someone who has a Room package):
- A gift bag with plenty of goodies and a kit of Mary Annarella's Killer Queen Cowl and your choice of colors in Birch Hollow Fibers Phillis DK for one camper
- All meals by a private chef, and plenty of snacks for one camper
- A lecture by Mary Annarella on Killer Queen and the Art of the Stitch for one camper
- A shawl pattern from Melissa Leapman and an instructional session with her reviewing design elements from the pattern for one camper
- Use of all of the island amenities and plenty of unstructured knitting time for one camper
- Round trip transportation from shore to the island for one camper
A Non-Knitter package includes the following (it does not include a room, so you will need to share with someone who has a Room package):
- All meals by a private chef, and plenty of snacks for one camper
- Use of all of the island amenities
- Round trip transportation from short to the island for one camper
To join us, you'll need to:
- Reserve a Room package (or share a room with someone who has reserved a Room package). Each package (Room or Camper) includes all meals, island amenities, and knitting materials for one person. If you are sharing with someone, one person needs to reserve the room package, and the other person must reserve a Camper package, which includes everything except a room.
- If you are sharing a Room with someone, reserve a Camper package or a Non-Knitter package.
- Put your choice of two colors of Birch Hollow Fibers Phillis DK, and which one is your main color (the teal color in the sample), in the notes of your order. This is not applicable to people reserving a Non-Knitter package. We have suggested some color palettes (scroll down beyond the room descriptions), or you are free to choose your own. Mary recommends that the more solid color be your main color and that you have good contrast between the two colors. You'll notice that the pattern was designed with a worsted weight yarn, but after discussing it with Mary, we swatched up Phillis DK, and we got gauge after blocking (and loved it :)). NOTE: The latest dye lot of Cedar is more salmon/pink than the photograph.
To help you decide which room to reserve, we've indicated what cabin it is in and any quirks, as well as the number and size of beds in it, if you want to share with a friend or organize a cabin among a group of friends. Prices differ depending upon the room type.
The room locations, beds, and maximum capacity per room are below (please read the descriptions carefully, as we will not be able to change rooms, once they are sold):

Laurel Island Notes: Laurel Island does not have en-suite bathrooms. All bathrooms are shared, and there is a shower house in the middle of the island with two private showers that all of the cabins share; the Lodge also has two showers. In addition, there are no paved paths on the island, so you should bring comfortable shoes/sandals. The dress code is very casual!
Please let us know either in the notes of your package, or by email, if you have any dietary restrictions.
